What to Pack for Turkey
Pack smart for Turkey's diverse climates
Turkey has diverse climates. Istanbul is humid in summer, cold in winter. Cappadocia has extreme temperatures — very cold in winter, very hot in summer. The Mediterranean coast (Antalya, Bodrum, Fethiye) has cold-mild winters and hot summers. The key is layering and dressing for the season.
This packing list covers all seasons and regions. Adjust based on your specific itinerary.

Essential Items for All Seasons
- Comfortable walking shoes: You will walk a lot. Ephesus, Istanbul's sights, Cappadocia's valleys. Break them in before your trip.
- Daypack or small backpack: For daily sightseeing (water bottle, sunscreen, guidebook, layers).
- Reusable water bottle: Tap water is safe in most cities but tastes chlorinated. Fill at hotels or buy bottled water. Staying hydrated in summer is critical.
- Scarf: For mosque visits (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Süleymaniye). Women should cover hair and shoulders. Men should avoid shorts. Scarves also protect from sun or chill.
- Sunscreen: The sun is strong, especially on the coast and in Cappadocia. Use SPF 30+.
- Hat and sunglasses: Essential in summer, helpful in spring/autumn.
- Power adapter: Turkey uses Type F plugs (same as most of Europe). 220V. Bring a universal adapter.
- Portable charger / power bank: Your phone battery will drain faster with maps, photos, and translation apps.
What to Wear at Specific Sites
Mosques (Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Süleymaniye, etc.)
- Women: Cover shoulders, knees, and hair. A scarf is essential. Long sleeves and long skirt or pants.
- Men: No shorts. Long trousers are required.
- Everyone: Remove shoes before entering. Carry a bag to hold them.
Ephesus, Pamukkale, Ruins
- Comfortable walking shoes (shoes with grip for Pamukkale travertines — barefoot on the travertines, shoes for the ruins)
- Hat and sunscreen (little shade at most ruins)
- Water bottle
- For Pamukkale: Swimsuit (for Cleopatra's Pool) and towel. Water shoes help on the travertines.
Beaches & Coastal Towns
- Standard beachwear is fine on the beach and at hotel pools
- Cover-up or t-shirt for beachside cafes and walking to/from beach
- Evenings: casual resort wear — sundresses, linen trousers, polo shirts
Cappadocia (Balloon flight & valleys)
- Balloon flight (sunrise): Dress warmly even in summer. Mornings are cold at altitude. Layers: thermal, sweater, jacket, hat. The basket is small; you will stand for 1 hour.
- Valley hiking: Hiking boots or sturdy sneakers. The paths are uneven and loose gravel. Long pants protect from sun and scratchy brush.
- Underground cities (Kaymakli, Derinkuyu): A light jacket or sweater (constant cool temperature inside). Good shoes — passages are narrow and low.
What NOT to Pack
- Formal wear: Even upscale restaurants do not require jackets or dresses. Smart casual is fine.
- Hair dryer, shampoo, etc.: Hotels provide these. Save suitcase space.
- Heavy guidebooks: Download maps and guides to your phone.
- Too many shoes: One comfortable walking shoe, one sandal/sneaker, one flip-flop for the beach.
Insider Tip: In Istanbul and coastal towns, you can buy almost anything you forget — sunscreen, hat, scarf, adapter — from a local shop. Prices are reasonable. Do not stress about forgetting one item. The one thing you cannot easily replace is comfortable broken-in walking shoes. Bring those.
Electronics & Documents
- Passport (valid 6 months beyond travel dates)
- Turkey e-Visa (printed copy + PDF on phone)
- Flight confirmations, hotel reservations (printed or digital)
- Travel insurance documents
- Credit/debit cards (notify your bank of travel dates)
- Cash (some Turkish Lira for arrival, but ATMs are everywhere)
- Phone with international plan or eSIM (Türk Telekom, Turkcell, Vodafone)
- Charger and cable (USB-C, Lightning, etc.)
- Power bank
Insider Tip: Pack a photocopy of your passport and visa, kept separate from the originals. Leave another copy at home with someone who can access it. This makes replacement much easier if your passport is lost or stolen.
