Events and Festivals in Istanbul

Istanbul has become a center of attraction for both renowned and aspiring artists, filmmakers, and singers. Almost all the big names in music have given concerts in Istanbul. Sometimes soon-to-be world-famous artists like Norah Jones gave a concert in Istanbul before becoming global stars.

In addition to singers and musicians, the Istanbul Film Festival, held almost every year since the 1980s, attracts famous directors and actors such as John Malkovich, Harvey Keitel, Sophia Loren, and established directors of cinema.

The Istanbul Biennial, held every two years (odd-numbered years), attracts painters, architects, and installation artists from around the world.

There are also many attractive concert halls and venues. The most distinguished of them is the St. Irene Museum, a Byzantine church hosting classical music concerts during the Istanbul Music Festival. Other interesting concert halls and venues are AKM (Atatürk Cultural Center) located right in Taksim Square, Cemal Reşit Rey Music Hall in Harbiye, Açık Hava Tiyatrosu (an open-air music festival ground also in Harbiye), and Kuruçeşme Park right on the Bosphorus. Küçükçiftlik Park and Santralistanbul are other important venues for concerts and shows.

Many of these events and festivals can be seen at IKSV (Istanbul Culture and Art Foundation).

In addition, there are many smaller-scale music festivals taking place year-round, hosting Jazz, Rock, and Classical Music concerts. Music lovers and professionals in Istanbul come together in online Turkish music communities.

The list of events below is a selection of year-round Istanbul activities. It may be a pleasant surprise to find your favorite artist performing in Istanbul. Do not forget to check upcoming events before traveling to Istanbul!
